The team behind this doc has included so much stunning footage shot by Michael himself, and by those around him, as well as file footage of the time. They've compiled a work of art and a realistic portrait of Hutchence's life. There is so much we learn in this about his final few dramatic and tumultuous years. There are contemporary interviews included, but no video / talking heads of them speaking now. This was the right choice by the filmmakers. It's simply contextual narration over the footage of the time. It was painstakingly edited/produced, and one of the best documents on a musical personality I've seen in decades. Highly recommend.

It's a darn good movie. No chase scenes or special effects, just a good plot, great character actors, and an interesting setting. The movie offers a believable story, a message that is not trite, and more than a few good laughs along the way. VHYes is a love letter to the era I grew up in.  Set largely in 1987 (I was 12) its a splicing of three main themes:  A wedding tape.  Two kids Ralph (Mason McNulty) and Josh (Rahm Braslaw) recording over Ralphs aforementioned parents wedding tape.  And a brilliant menagerie of 80s themed television. After that trailer, youre probably wondering if VHYes is a comedy? Or maybe a horror? Is this some kind of weird love story? Is it the most nostalgic flick youll see this year? Yes is the definitive answer to all of those! I cant say more until Jan 12 th, when I will post my review.  But I can tell you that this thing touched all my pleasure centers in ways I found incredible by films end. Such is the era being celebrated in VHYes, a charming and breezy throwback comedy about a boy in 1987 who gets a new VHS recorder for Christmas and accidentally tapes over his parents wedding video. Thats already a good hook, but the structural brilliance is in the edit — In something of a found-footage format, VHSYes  was shot entirely on VHS and Beta, and the film plays out las if you dusted off an old, well-loved home videotape and watched it from start to finish, with all the random scene cuts and interjections that come with it. Mason McNulty stars as Ralph, the young man in question, and after getting his hands on the recorder, he proceeds to put everything on tape in the following days. Fully embracing the fun potential of his concept, director  Jack Henry Robbins  weaves a tapestry of overlapping narratives — both those from the familys daily life, and those they record from their favorite TV shows. In doing so, he mostly side-steps tradition narrative in favor of an interwoven series of funny, occasionally emotional vignettes. Image via Fantastic Fest The TV segments take up most of the films runtime, and theyre varying levels of funny featuring comedy regulars like Thomas Lennon, Courtney Pauroso,   Kerri Kenney, Mark Proksch, Charlene Yi, along with a couple of starrier cameos from Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon. Theres the home shopping hosts with an awkward romantic history (Lennon and Pauroso) some old-school late-night cable softcore with sexy space aliens, and a bizarre Bob Ross-esque soft-spoken artist (Kenney) who pretty much steals the movie. As  VHYes skips back and forth between snippets of Ralphs favorite TV shows, we keep track of the countless storylines, all of which lead to a pretty satisfying payoff in their own right. But  VHYes is more than a clever parlor trick of editing and interwoven narratives. The film gets its heart through Ralphs day-to-day story, glimpsed between the comedy characters, during which he accidentally captures what is likely the beginning of his parents divorce. That throughline weaves through the antics like an undercurrent of heartache in the humor, revealing the cracks in their relationship from the day of their wedding to the week of Ralphs post-Christmas camcorder adventures. VHYes also makes some unexpected choices as it comes to a close that strive for new levels of genre and ambition, taking things in surprising directions. Some of those choices play better than others, but overall the films final bold swings cement  VHYes as an ambitious and clever piece of indie filmmaking that embraces its concept for all it has to offer. We see  VHYes entirely through Ralphs 12-year-old eyes; through the hyper channel-changing of a bored tween, who captures his parents crumbling relationship without quite knowing what hes seeing, and flips through the horrors of daily news in the late 80s on the hunt for his favorite shows. Robbins is completely convincing in his efforts to transport us into the minds eye of an 80s kid, whos just trying to make sense of a demented world. Theres no shortage of hit series and films out there that traffic in commoditized nostalgia,  VHYes  feels like the real deal, bittersweet as the real thing. Better yet, as the chaos of the independent segments starts to click into focus, the fragmented characters from both the TV segments and Ralphs real-world come to life, while the films deeper themes start to click into focus. Robbins ties those themes up with a delightful thread of meta-comedy, hinged on a behavioral scientist who fears for the future of the human race if we continue to pivot culture towards video content, and well, it sounds a whole lot like social media and smartphone culture as we know it today. VHYes shares some DNA with the type of oddball sketches youd find on Adult Swim, but Robbins has something to say beneath his chaos, and most importantly, a whole lot of heart. Always entertaining and surprising,  VHYes  gives you a chaotic trip back to the 80s thats emotionally complex, structurally brilliant, and often, laugh-out-loud funny. Although I never owned one of those bulky Sony S-VHS monsters with that oversized red record button so proto-reminiscent of Ren and Stimpy s infamous candy-colored “history eraser button, ” I absolutely recall my first Hi8 and, long prior to that, my dads old Kodak Super-8mm film camera which once discovered was immediately deployed to stop-motion animate my own Jurassically clumsy tributes to my favorite filmmaker of my youth, the late, great Ray Harryhausen. (I mourn the fact that my 30-second epics of Brontosaur on T. Rex action, complete with crimson gore provided by the 1970s kidhood modeling clay of choice, Caran dAche, were forever lost somewhere on the way to adulthood. ) Director Robbins enticingly unique VHYes is many things: a Dada-esque assemblage of mid-Eighties era pop culture, a series of often laugh-out-loud bizarro blackout sketches modeled mostly on the television fare of the time, a moderately melancholy love letter to the unexpectedly giddy power of home VHS recorders when placed in the hands of a 12-year-old, and a thoughtful riff on the addictive nature of the ever-voyeuristic camera eye. Mostly though, its about the meandering adventures of Ralph (McNulty) who receives the camera as a Christmas gift from his father (an unrecognizable Tim Robbins, the Jack Henry's father) and mother (Allen. Along with his best friend Josh (Braslaw) Ralph takes to taping snippets of everything on 1987 television, from late-night soft-core Skinemax parodies, to a Bob Ross-inspired "The Joy of Painting” with Joan (Kenney in wonderfully full-on disturbathon mode) and an Antiques Roadshow doppelgänger featuring What We Do in the Shadows energy vampire Proksch. In between theres cut-and-paste scenes of the two besties blowing up cherry bombs, investigating the local haunted house, and just generally behaving like any free range 12-year-old given a license to film. The beauty of VHYes is that Robbins made the genius aesthetic decision to film the entire thing using actual VHS and Betamax cameras. Given Ralphs pre-teen attention span, few of the television and commercial parodies overstay their welcome. Theres an inspired talk show bit that mirrors the sequence in David Cronenbergs Videodrome in which Deborah Harry, James Woods, and “Brian OBlivion” discuss the ominous future of the rapidly changing televisual landscape. Also scattered throughout Ralphs tape – which portentously just happens to be his parents' wedding ceremony VHS he snagged on accident – are random moments of his mom and dad and the seemingly downwardly spiraling state of their marriage. This overlays something of a shadow over VHYes otherwise chaotic and scattershot in-camera anti-editing. Kudos to child actors McNulty and Braslaw, who give pitch perfect performances as birds of a feather exploring a sometimes hilarious albeit potentially grave new world via the magic of VHS. To quote Videodrome s aforementioned telepresence OBlivion, “The battle for the mind of North America will be fought in the video arena … Whatever appears on the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Television is reality, and reality is less than television. ” And that is, by the end of the 72-minute-long VHYes gleefully immersive, intermittently profound “found footage, ” a lesson Ralph osmotically absorbs through the VHS viewfinder of his life. VHYes by Mike McGranaghan Perhaps the highest compliment I can pay VHYes is that it made me nostalgic for '80s late night TV. Explaining the appeal to someone who wasn't there is difficult, so thank goodness this film exists. Those of us who remember the enthralling weirdness of flipping channels after 11:00 PM during that era will squeal with delight over the pitch-perfect recreation of it. Those who don't may find themselves longing for a time they weren't part of. The general premise is that a 12-year-old boy named Ralph (Mason McNulty) gets a video camera for Christmas and accidentally records after-hours TV shows and home movies over his parents' wedding video. The film is presented as though we are watching that tape. We know he taped over the wedding because there are brief glimpses of it in between his recording sessions, just as would occur on a real VHS tape. What follows is a montage of snippets from anything Ralph tapes. There's a program featuring a Bob Ross-like painter (Kerri Kenney) who gradually reveals a disturbing side; a home shopping network where the host (Thomas Lennon) sells average crap for exorbitant prices and speaks in double entendres; a true crime show that attempts to instill a sense of satanic panic; and, most amusingly, a late night movie program that airs porn flicks with the sex parts cut out. Of course, these are exaggerated versions of what actually aired, yet they precisely capture the tone and spirit of their targets. VHYes does this for comedy, but more importantly to convey how strange those shows felt if you were a kid watching them during that time. There simply wasn't the abundance of content that there is now, so cable channels took chances, aired what they could get the rights to, or broadcast whatever was sitting around because they figured viewership was low. Director Jack Henry Robbins – whose parents, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, have cameos – stages all of it for maximum hilarity. At the same time, VHYes is more than a stunt. Through its recurring skits, the movie comments on modern topics like immigration, climate change, and the way we all carry cameras around with us nowadays (via cell phones. Everything swirls together, leading to an ingenious finale that will speak to anyone with a head full of pop cultural detritus. VHYes, which was shot completely on VHS and Beta, smartly runs just 72 minutes. Any longer and the joke would be run into the ground. As with any film of this type, different viewers will find certain parts of it to be funnier than others. Regardless of what you find most humorous, though, this is a clever, witty, and ridiculously fun flashback to an era where late night TV provided a treasure trove of eccentricity. ☆ ☆ ☆ out of four VHYes is unrated, but contains adult language and thematic material. When it doesnt, its like a bad date that had huge promise until it got underway. Jack Henry Robbins' “VHYes, ” with all of its nostalgia for late ‘80s TV and its endemic cheesiness, follows after the likes of Weird Al Yankovic's masterpiece " UHF, Casper Kelly's endlessly loopable opening credits hellscape "Too Many Cooks, and even the Kyle Mooney skits that are "cut for time" on "Saturday Night Live. And while I adore all of those polarizing works, I didn't see what was funny about the shallow wackiness of "VHYes. " Advertisement Shot entirely on VHS and Betamax, the whole of "VHYes" is presented as the contents of a video tape, which was initially used to film the wedding for the parents of a young boy named Ralph ( Mason McNulty. When Ralph gets a camera for Christmas in 1987, and learns that he can record from the TV, it opens a world of possibilities. Namely, whatever he can find on the TV that is weird to him at the time. In one of its many abrupt, fuzzy cuts, an excited young Ralph jumps on his bed and says that he wants to create the ultimate video playlist, and soon into watching “VHYes” you accept that thats all youre going to get.  Instead of feeling like the chaos of a found tape, “VHYes” assembles itself like a series of sketches that it can bounce between, with random peeks back at the original wedding video contents; it struggles to have a heart by intermittently making it a story about Ralph realizing the truth behind his parents' marriage. Some sketch set-ups are directly, lazily recognizable to TV history: one cop parody steals the red and blue text from “Law and Order” because you wouldnt get that its meant to parody if it didnt have that logo. As if a tell on its weak absurdity, VHYes" has yet another parody on TV painting instructor Bob Ross (even after Deadpool did it) with a segment starring Kerri Kenney, who turns the zen of such a host into the mindset of a creepy person who believes in aliens.  The very nostalgia within the concept becomes a pit, even when “VHYes” threatens to get truly weird. Its not until the final minutes that the movie taps into the reality-bending that had been hinted at earlier, when Ralph started to see himself in the stuff he was watching, after one segment involved a VHS expert talking about the soul-suck that will be handheld recording in the future. Many parody sketches dont have a discernible reference to build on (the recognition is what makes it initially funny) and instead rely on a shallow cheesiness. Even though "VHYes" features many dynamic funny people like Kenney, Thomas Lennon, Mark Prosch, Charlyne Yi, and Robbins' parents ( Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon) many of the characters in these sketches are so broad they aren't particularly clever. “VHYes” breaks the biggest rule of parody, over and over again: it simply tries way too hard with material thats far too easy. Thats the case with an adult film bit that goes for low-hanging fruit of bad acting, as one guy is poorly reading cue cards in a late night movie about three alien women. Or there's an ongoing true-crime show about how a sorority thought one of their sisters was a witch because she did magic, which is a funny premise given a flat execution. The commercials that are thrown in the mix, like about a violent security company, or pads to sound-proof your bathroom, are like random splatters of paint whose only intention is to fulfill the project's obvious self-amusement.  While “VHYes” is very much inspired by the media experience of 1987, its actually about a very modern hell: Your friend sits you down to show you something really funny on YouTube, but oh, no—theyve misjudged your sense of humor. Now youre stuck, watching all of it, trying to find something funny to offer a polite relief. I started to feel trapped by my obligation to watch something that could very well have been my type, but now Im just grateful the filmmakers of “VHYes” didnt watch me watch it in laughless silence. So so good. This is a good one.I am from India. I have dealt with indie bookstores for 60 years in 7 of our big cities. It was always a pleasure to visit them, engage with the owners, peruse thousands of titles, browse through many of them. Often I stayed till the shops closed for the day. But this is no more easy or pleasant... I am on the wrong side of 70, commuting across most cities is a horrible time consuming torture. It is costly, and parking is a problem. I plainly do not like most of the current fiction. I am now seriously into used nonfiction books, For me, Amazon is useful, and convenient. Before that, I used to order books through another online stores- Infibeam who used to get the books from vendors in US. It used to take 6-8 weeks, and shipping cost was twice or thrice the cost of books, yet it was worth it since most of the books I got were simply not available in India. Now Amazon also sells used books, and though their prices are not great most of the time, that is the only source. This way, I have purchased hundreds of books which I have loved since my college days. Yet my sets of Louis L'Amour, Will Durant, Nevil Shute or AJ Cronin are not complete as these volumes are not available. So Amazon has its uses, though I miss the indie stores with their friendly and knowledgeable owners...
